What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is an ancient system of medicine that was developed over thousands of years in India.  It took many ancient physicians lifetimes of healing work to synthesize this system of medicine.  The ancient physician Charaka (dates) codified much of the information that we have today on Ayurveda in the Charaka Samhita and the ancient physician Sushruta (dates) wrote his tome, the Sushrut Samhita, on topics including even surgery.  In fact, Ayurveda was the first medical system to develop the practice of rhinoplasty (plastic surgery of the nose)!

What can Ayurveda do for me?

Ayurveda can provide the individual with a comprehensive system that can bring a state of optimal health.  Ayurveda uses many modalities to arrive there, such as herbal therapies, nutritional therapies, and yoga therapy.  However, it is the Samkhya philosophy that guides Ayurveda in its consideration of therapies.

What is Samkhya philosophy?

Samkhya philosophy is one of the six ancient philosophical systems of India.  Samkhya literally means "numbers" - this is appropriate as the Samkhya philosophy determined the characteristics of the elements that are numerous that comprise the manifest world.

Through an understanding of Samkhya philosophy, the practitioner is guided to understand how to align the patient with their own source of deep health and energy - called Purusha and Prakriti.
